Bonyo's Kenya Mission
Dr. Barry J. Greenberg was a skilled orthopedic surgeon and passionate humanitarian whose work helped shape Bonyo’s Kenya Mission (BKM). Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed his residency in spinal rehabilitation at Akron General Medical Center and Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1974.
Throughout his career in Akron, Dr. Greenberg received numerous awards, published medical research, and held leadership positions including President of the Akron City Hospital Medical Staff. But it was his deep compassion and desire to make a global impact that led him to cofound BKM with Dr. Bonyo, following a life-changing experience in Nairobi after the 9/11 attacks.
He traveled to Kenya multiple times a year, treating patients and mentoring medical students. His legacy lives on through the “B. Greenberg Wing” of the clinic, which continues to provide vital medical, pediatric, and optometry care to the people of Wan'gaya Village. He also served over a decade on the Akron Zoo’s board and is remembered for his lifelong dedication to service, teaching, and community.
