Dr. Marazon

(In Memoriam)

Dr. Marazon was a professor at Ohio University’s College of Medicine when he first became involved with the mission. After a group of 13 students returned from an early trip to Kenya without a medical director in 1996, Dr. Marazon attended their presentation—and immediately stepped forward to volunteer. In 1997, he became the mission’s first official medical director, joining founder Dr. Bonyo Bonyo and bringing with him a sense of structure, mentorship, and leadership that would shape the mission for years to come.

Dr. Marazon was responsible for growing the medical volunteer program, bringing Ohio University medical students on yearly trips to Kenya. What began with 20 students eventually grew to nearly 50, with care being provided in makeshift clinics around Kisumu—churches, open fields, and even under trees. In 2003, he declared, “This is the last time we’re working under a tree,” helping lead the charge to build a permanent clinic in Wan'gaya Village, contributing financially and serving as a driving force behind its creation.

Despite being appointed interim Dean of Ohio University’s College of Medicine, Dr. Marazon continued to travel with student groups and remained deeply committed to the mission. Beloved by students and locals alike—who simply called him “Dr. M”—he was known for his tireless work ethic and warm spirit. Even during his final days in 2005, when illness had affected much of his memory, he spoke often of Kenya and remained eager to help.

Dr. Marazon’s legacy lives on through the students he mentored, the clinic he helped build, and the lifelong impact he made on communities in both Kenya and the U.S. His compassion and dedication remain at the heart of Bonyo’s Kenya Mission.
